By BUSINESS REPORTER GOVERNMENT will soon implement a sheep and goat project to increase foreign exc hange earnings from exp orts.
The Zambia livestock value chain support project to be implemented with the help of the African Development Bank (AfDB) will be spread nationwide and is estimated to cost US$78 m illion.
According to AfDB projects update for the region, the project will directly create 3, 000 permanent jobs and 125, 000 seasonal jobs while 500, 000 people will be employed indirectly on a seasonal basis along the small ruminant value chain. The project would mobilise participating farmers into fully trained farmer groups or associations in major livestock production areas and around community-based Livestock Service Centres (LSC).
“About 6,000,000 people, including 3,000,000 women and youth, will indirectly benefit from increases in supply of quality livestock products.
“The project aims to transform small ruminants farming into sustainable commercialised and profitable Yentures that contribute to income generation, employment creation and poverty reduction,” the AfDB said.
The project is also expected to increase employment opportunities in livestock husbandry, marketing, and livestock products value chain.
The development objective is to contribute to economic growth and improvement of livelihoods.
