STREET VENDORS MUST MOVE

-

Editor,

IT is really shocking that ve ndors are refusing to move off the road which is under construction claiming their business will be negat ive ly affected.

Honestly this kind of thinking lacks logic. Lumumba road is under construction because people cried for its rehabilitation. Now that the project is underway, street vendors want to stand in the way of progress by refusing to move. This is unacceptable. People should not be allowed to stand in the way of progress. This country is in a hurry to develop and roads form a major part of that. I hope that Lusaka minister, Bowman Lusambo, will take up this matter and deal with the issue as a matter of urgency. Lumumba road is a key road to the heavy industrial area and also as a getaway to other provinces. It is the main road for trucks transiting from the Copperbelt to Southern province on way to South Africa. The economic importance of this road can not be over emphasized. Minister Lusambo is a serious man and I know that he will have the vendors off the street in no time. It is not true that there are spaces in markets. This is the same reason have used to gain sympathy to trade on the streets. But spaces in markets are available. The minister should check the markets to ascertain this and ensure that people trade from safe places. We do not want another disaster.
