Teacher union role questioned

- Dear Editor,

THE role of teacher unions in our country leave s much to be desired.

We have teachers unions such as BETUZ, ZNUT and SESTUZ to mention but a few whose roles regarding teacherpupil relations leaves many questions unanswered.

This is in connection with numerous cases of male teachers having sex with pupils.

These cases still remain rife especially in most of our schools. Our teachers unions are only renowned for outings to workshops where they come up with resolutions regarding their profession which later end up in dustbins due to lack of implementation.

At these workshops little is focused on teacher-pupil relation or how they could tackle this problem.

The problem with these teacher unions is the interest in workshop allowances instead of tackling serious issues regarding the welfare of the girlchild education.

In fact girl-child education is extremely under threat because of these Randy teachers who fail to control their sexual appetite.

I remember of a case in 2014 where a teacher at Chinyunyu basic school in Rufunsa district was arrested for administering a concoction of medicines on a pupil whom he allegedly impregnated in order for her to terminate the pregnancy.

Kennedy Moono, who allegedly impregnated a grade 10 pupil at the same school, is said to have forced her to drink a concoction in a bid to terminate the pregnancy when he discovered that he had impregnated the girl.

This is among the several cases which teacher unions need to reflect on and ensure that sanity comes back to the teaching profession otherwise the girl-child in school will remain haunted and traumatized.
