-

By NATION REPORTER CHONGWE deputy mayor Evans M’hambi is the new Chongwe district Patriotic Front chairperson.

Mr M’hambi, who is also Nakatindi Ward councillor, went through unopposed after one of his opponents was disqualified on account of inadequate tenure of office in the party. His predecessor backed out at the 11th hour due to the evident overwhelming popularity of Mr M’hambi.

He was declared winner at the district party elections held on Wednesday.

Mr M’hambi told the Daily Nation in an interview that he was humbled by the overwhelming support given to him by the delegates.

“I am humbled and promise to meet the aspirations of the party in the district and nation at large. It was not an easy road to this sweet victory.

I would like to urge all the party organs in the district to continue championing the party manifesto which is aimed at uplifting the standards of living for the people. Ours is a pro-poor party and we shall not seek to serve our own interests at the expense of the much needed development in all sectors,” he said.

He called on all new office bearers to be servants of the people. “We must be like our party president who is humble and promotes unity. We must ensure that we carry everyone on board and continue sailing the boat to greater heights,’’ he said. He paid gratitude to Chongwe mayor Geoffrey Chumbwe who was his mentor and also thanked Member of Parliament Japhen Mwakalombe for being neutral during campaigns for the party polls and the PFs’ national elections committee led by Yamfwa Mukanga for ensuring that the elections were free and fair.

Mr M’hambi said the PF elections were held in a peaceful environment. ‘’This is an example to other districts in our party to hold peaceful intra-party elections, as a ruling party we must show a national character that will foster democracy,’’ he added

He said other political parties were watching the PF which ought to be an impeccable example of a democratic organisation.

‘’This is not necessarily my victory, it is democracy that has won and this is what we must promote. It is now time to grow our party at all levels and ensure that we deliver a landslide victory to our President Mr Edgar Chagwa Lungu,” he said.
