‘No poor quality goods’
ZAMBIA Compulsory Standards Agency says it will bolster operations to ensure that goods on the Zambian market are safe and of high quality.
ZCSA senior public relations officer Lee Hamunji said the agency would ensure that all products were of good quality and safe for public consumption.
He was speaking in an interview with the Daily Nation at the on-going Zambia International Trade Fair (ZITF) in Ndola.
Mr Hamunji said the agency would step up operations with surveillance checks and strict monitoring of goods that were on the Zambian market.
ZCSA is a Government statutory body established under an Act of Parliament last year to provide for administration and maintenance of compulsory standards for the purposes public safety and health, consumer and environmental protection.
Mr Hamunji noted that the agency wanted to ensure that quality goods gained international recognition to be displayed on foreign as well as domestic markets
"If we have quality products capable of competing at the international market, revenue for the country would greatly and ultimately contribute the nation's Gross Domestic Product," he said.
He said with quality products on the market, there would be more employment opportunities because of significant growth that the industry was likely to record.
Mr Hamunji said it was an offence to display, peddle or sell goods of poor quality and his organisation had the power to confiscate and destroy such goods and also fine the company fined.
He urged Zambians to ensure that they check labels on products they intended ti purchase and not just shop on impulse due to the attractive price of the product.
