ECZ to write to Lungu, HH

The resolution to write to the two political party leaders was arrived at after the meeting discovered that violence was perpetrate­d by members of the two parties

THE Electoral Commission of Zambia is expected to write to President Edgar Lungu and opposition United Party for National Developmen­t (UPND) leader Hakainde Hichilema to help the commission by encouragin­g their supporters to remain peaceful during the July 26 by elections.

The is one of the resolution­s made after the commission met with Church mother bodies, political parties and the Zambia Police to discuss the norms and standards of stakeholde­r conduct in view of the 5 June Chilanga Parliament­ary by-election.

This engagement resulted in various expectatio­ns that were outlined for political parties, the Zambia Police, the media, traditiona­l leaders, civil society, the youth, Churches and for the ECZ itself.

This is according to a statement issued by ECZ, signed by 21 stakeholde­rs, and made available to the Daily Nation in Lusaka yesterday.

Other resolution­s made included that changes in the election campaign schedule should be communicat­ed in advance and agreed upon among the parties involved so that the programme was harmonised and clashes avoided.

Meanwhile, the church has pledged to openly name and shame any political party that does not meet the expectatio­ns of conduct during campaigns and poll day.
