UPND warned
IT political IS unconstitutional party to receive for funding a from a foreign organisation including the European Union (EU), former UPND presidential spokesperson Edward Mumbi warned. He reiterated that the truth would always prevail if UPND was lying.
Mr Mumbi charged that the opposition party should not cry foul if it was found wanting and subsequently deregistered. However, UPND Secretary General Stephen Katuka told the Daily Nation that it was utter nonsense to allege that the party’s mayoral campaigns were being funded by the EU. This follows assertions that the EU was funding the UPND And Zambia Republican Party (ZRP) President Wright Musoma has challenged the EU to come out in the open and respond to allegations that the organization had funded the UPND’s campaigns in the Lusaka mayoral by-election.
Mr Katuka said if such an arrangement was true it would have been between individuals but added that it was however unlikely that there was such an arrangement.
“It is nonsense and rubbish! Why would the EU fund the UPND in the mayoral elections? These allegations are baseless and mere politicking,” he charged.
He said he was unaware of the alleged funding adding that such allegations were aimed at discrediting the party as it goes for the mayoral elections set for July 26.
“As far as I am concerned, there is no such arrangement, in fact it is news to me. If people are saying that there is someone from the EU who was funding the party then we are saying that the EU was aware of the funding. “But why should they fund us, we as a party do not have such a partnership with EU,” Mr Katuka said.
