POLITICS OF ENVY AND JEALOUSY

- EPHRAIM KWENDAMPONDA.

Dear Editor

THERE is one newspaper editor who seems determined to promote his style of journalism of attacking whichever President is in power to gain some political relevance and win newspaper sales.

The attacks are now on the person of President Edgar Lungu, who cannot seem to do anything right.

Somehow Zambians have continued to fall for this ruse.

I agree with your correspondent Sandra Makasa that our preoccupation with corruption and everything wrong, will not take us anywhere. We must begin to embrace the good things that our country is attaining. We must start to appreciate each other and build the country.

When Dr. Kaunda was in power, we heard stories about copper and cobalt theft, which really galvanised the Zambian people against the UNIP regime which was seen to be corrupt and dictatorial. After Kaunda came Second Republican President Dr. Chiluba who was hounded to his early death by a barrage of allegations and accusations which came to nothing. All the attacks were made in the name of media freedom.

After Chiluba came Levy Mwanawasa who was first idolised when he pandered to the whims and dictates of the cartel. When he sensed the danger and distanced himself from their mischief was not spared the virulent attacks either. He was verbally assaulted as a fool and political buffoon.

The good Lord saved him from further ridicule.

Came Rupiah Banda who also ended in court prosecuted by the same cartel which has made it a point to use the media for the most destructive, personalised and evil campaigns that are directed at individuals rather than issues of the days.

When President Michael Sata turned away from their evil wiles he was also under attack.\

Somehow, we Zambians never learn. We cannot seem to distinguish between those people that genuinely mean well for this country and those that are intent on undermining and belittling any effort aimed at improving this country.

Unless we come together and form a common front against the internal and external forces militating against development, we shall not progress, we shall instead continue to wallow in the depths of depravity and infighting where foreigners will benefit at the expense of local interests.

The current demonisation of Edgar Lungu will not serve this country any purpose because we must work with him as Head of State to make this country a better place to live in. He cannot do it alone. He needs each and every Zambian, but this requires that we also reciprocate in kind for the good of the country.

We must stop this perpetual witchunt, which is nothing but jealousy and envy. Our country will only develop if we all put in our best. We will not develop by pulling those who succeed in politics or business down.
