ASSAULTED BILUMBA STILL UPND COUNCILLOR

- By NATION REPORTER

KANYAMA Ward 10 Councillor, Brighton Bilumba, who was beaten by suspected UPND cadres yesterday, says he has not resigned from the party but chose to work with the Patriotic Front for the sake of development.

Police saved Mr Bilumba from a lynching as suspected UPND cadres descended on him when he went to vote at Mukwa polling station within Kanyama.

Mr Bilumba said in an interview that he was sad and feared for his life as people whom he considered colleagues had organised a mob to attack him soon after voting.

“It is sad that colleagues from my own party organised a mob to attack me and I was only saved by the Zambia Police who responded quickly,” Mr Bilumba said.

He said he was concerned that the UPND had become so violent as to attack its own members.

“I just went to vote at Mukwa polling station in my ward, and I voted like everyone else but as I was coming out of the polling station, I was surrounded by a group of UPND supporters led by the constituency chairlady who instructed them to beat me as some hurled insults at me,” he said.

Mr Bilumba said he was shocked that people whom he had considered as his brothers and sisters had turned against him and wanted to attack him.

He said he had decided to support the Patriotic Front as it was the government of the day and he could not serve the people of his ward if he did not engage Government.

“UPND gave birth to me, but if your father mistreats you and you find an uncle that is treating you well what can you do?” he said.

Mr Bilumba said working with the PF would be beneficial to the people of his ward.
