Man shot dead in rescue attempt

A MAN who attempted to rescue his elder brother from being arrested b\ wildlife officers has been shot dead and the officer that Nilled hiP has hiPself been arrested along with seYen other officers

The eight National Parks and

:ildlife department officers are expected to appear in court soon for allegedly murdering the 38 year old man.

Muchinga Province Police Commission­er Chola Katanga who confirmed the developmen­t to Daily Nation yesterday, identified one of the suspects as 1oah Chilanga, a National Parks and

:ild /ife department officer. Mr Katanga said the incident occurred on Friday around 03:00 hours in Suwanama village in Chief Chikwa’s area of Chama District.

‘‘Police received a report from Nguni Eliud aged 42, that his young brother, Patrick Nguni aged 38, was shot and killed by 1oah &hilanga an officer from the Department of National Parks and Wild Life of Chama District who was in the company of seven other officers from the same Department all of Manga Camp in Chikwa area,’’ Mr. Katanga said.

Mr Katanga said the incident occurred on Friday at 03:00hrs at Suwanama village in Chief Chikwa’s area of Chama District after eight officers raided the home of deceased’s brother who was facing a charge of being in Possession of Government Trophy namely (game meat). Mr. Katanga said the suspect opened fire on 0r 1guni who had rushed to the house of his brother and attempted to rescue him.

Mr. Katanga said the expended rounds of ammunition­s from a 9mm Pistol were recovered from the scene while the gun is yet to be recovered.

Mr Katanga said the body of the deceased has been deposited in Chama District Hospital Mortuary awaiting Postmortem.

+e said all the officers from the NPWLD have since been apprehende­d and will appear in court soon.
