LAMU touts medical excellence

By NATION REPORTER THE founders of Lusaka Apex Medical University (LAMU) possess a distinguis­hed record in the health sector, including a history in public service, says out-going chairman Chikomeni Banda.

Mr %anda said it was no accident that the founders of LAM8 were an inspiratio­n in supplement­ing the government¶s efforts in addressing the nation¶s health challenges. +e said that LAM8¶s success in the last decade was testimony that its optimism was not misplaced.

Mr %anda was speaking in Lusaka recently at the university¶s th annual general meeting AGM .

³7he university entered the market in as the only pure private medical university with a handful of students, and now has more than , enrolled in various medical and health discipline­s offered by the university,

³7he growth raises the ante, challengin­g the university to set itself the ambitious goal of becoming the premier provider of medical and health education,” he said

LAM8¶s optimism was fuelled by the increasing demand for Tuality higher education in medical and health studies locally and across the continent.

Mr %anda said demand was propelled by the Tuest of government­s across the continent striving to provide access to cost effective, Tuality health care to its citi]ens. 7o meet the demand, the university was more than determined to developing relevant, and easily absorbable medical and health skills which would be underpinne­d by a highly Tualified academic staff.

³,n addition, it was expanding and upgrading its facilities to world class standards. 7his includes the newly completed faculty of medicine lecture theatre with a capacity of students,

³2ther key developmen­ts in the pipeline are establishm­ent of a radiograph­y and radiology unit and constructi­on of a diagnostic, training and rehabilita­tion centre. 2n the cards, too, is the constructi­on of LAM8 7eaching +ospital,”” said Mr %anda

+e said to crown it all, the university had produced its first crop of doctors of which some were now at 2xford and +arvard universiti­es.

³7his all goes to show that the people behind the university are highly experience­d health trainers, senior medical consultant­s, business consultant­s, researcher­s and specialist­s in related fields. 7his ensures and guarantees strong profession­alism,” %anda.
