Ban Nyamiyami god worship, urges citizen

- By NATION REPORTER

A concerned Christian in Siavonga has called on Government to ban the worshiping of the ‘Nyaminyami’ god on the Zambian side of Lake Kariba.

In an interview with the Daily Nation in Siavonga, Elizabeth Phiri said Zambia was a Christian nation which must not tolerate the worship of serpents on its land.

she said officers at the Zambezi River Authority ZRA and some Government officials that were inciting Traditional leaders in the area to hold a ritual to appease the snake believed to be in Lake Kariba, must be summoned and warned by Government to stop their activities.

''Government through the ministry of National guidance and religious affairs must summon ZRA to explain to them that what they are trying to do is unacceptable in this country.

The ministry should also warn government officials that are working with ZRA to incite Chiefs in the Gwembe valley to hold prayers for the Nyaminyami,” she said.

Ms Phiri said Nyaminyami was strange to Zambia and that ZRA should understand that Zambia as a Christian nation is governed on &hristian principals as proclaimed and enshrined in the Constitution.

Last month Chiefs in the Gwembe valley in Southern Province differed at a meeting organiSed by the ZRA for the purpose of holding a ritual meant to appease 'Nyaminyami' the Tonga god believed to be dwelling in the Lake .ariba in Siavonga district.

ZRA and Siavonga district com- missioner Mr Lovemore .anyama had convened a pre meeting held at Manchinchi bay hotel before the actual ritual could be held but Chief Chipepo a staunch born again Christian, opposed the move saying the act was satanic in nature and not welcome in a Christian nation like Zambia.
