Car kills 7-monthold baby

….driver fell asleep while cruising and hit the victims

A SEVEN-MONTH-OLD baby has died after being hit by a its driver asleep in Kabitaka mine township in Solwezi.

North Western Province police commission­er Hudson Namachila said the incident happened on Sunday around 09:30 hours and identified the victim as Eunice Sebastian.

Mr Namachila said Julius Lungu, 41, of Kabitaka mine township who, whilst driving a Toyota Prado registrati­on number BCB 5537ZM along Kabitka road, lost control and careered off the road and hit into three pedestrian­s, Lucy Kyabanya, 20, Moses Sebastian, 25, and the deceased baby Eunice.

"The body sustained fatal head injuries and died on the spot while the other victims sustained deep cuts on the foreheads with one with a suspected fractured left leg," he said.

He said the two survivors were admitted to Solwezi General Hospital while the body of the body was also deposited in the mortuary awaiting a post-mortem.

He disclosed that investigat­ions had revealed that the driver of the motor vehicle fell asleep whilst driving and lost control other hit into the three pedestrian­s.

"Therefore, the driver is to be blamed for the accident and has since been charged for causing death by dangerous driving contrary section 161(1) of Act No 11 of 2002 of the laws of Zambia," Mr Namachila said.
