LUSAKA WATER CRISIS PERSISTS
THE water crisis that has hit most parts of Lusaka has persisted. An on the spot check by the
Daily Nation last evening in Lusaka’s Matero Township found several residents with plastic containers forming a queue at a local school.
And in Chilenje Township residents have complained of erratic water supply for the past five days.
In separate interviews, some residents in Chilenje complained of the erratic water supply they are experiencing in the area since last Saturday. One
of the residents, Michael Phiri complained that they had had in the area and other surrounding areas such as Chalala for the past five days.
Mr Phiri explained that water was a very important resource in every home and that the water utility company was failing to provide water which was a necessity.
“We have not had water for five days and Lusaka Water and Sewerage Company (LWSC) has no solutions for us, they just inform us they will be shutting down water supply because of the construction works.
If they have failed to provide us with water let the relevant authorities come on board and help and not subjecting us to such suffering while we always pay for bills,” Mr Phiri said.
Another resident Joy Mulenga said it was hard to run a home without water.
“I would rather be without power in a home but not water because water is a very important resource in a home. We need to utilise it for our toilets and to bath”, Ms Phiri said.
Meanwhile, Marketing and public relations Manager Patson Phiri explained that the erratic water supply was as a result of the ongoing works at the Libala water works to improve the water reticulation in Lusaka city. Mr Phiri said water was supposed to be restored by Tuesday but a contractor at University Teaching Hospital (UTH) broke the main water pipe line that pumped water near State House before it could reach Lumumba reservoir.
He said the utility company was doing everything possible to ensure that the situation was restored.
