Ndola council seizes 47 goats

-

By NATION REPORTER THE NDOLA City Council has seized 47 goats from Ndeke and Jacaranda residential areas.

Council public relations manager Tilyenji Mwanza said the local authority carried out an operation and confiscated 47 goats from Ndeke and Jacaranda areas.

Ms Mwanza said in an interview that the goats were confiscated because it was against the law to rear livestock in residential areas.

The local authority has since applied for a court order to either auction the goats or dispose of them.

"The Department of Public Health will not relent in operations to patrol the city and rid of stray animals," she said.

She advised residents not to rear chickens in residential areas, a practice which had become common in the city.

Ms Mwanza stated that the rearing of animals in residential areas increased chances of the spread of various diseases.

Meanwhile, two residents of Ndola had claimed ownership of 12 out of the 47 goats which were seized by the council.

Town Clerk Wisdom Bwalya said separately that only two people had claimed ownership of 12 goats out of 47 and that one owned five while the other claimed seven animals.

Mr Bwalya said the rest of the goats were awaiting for the court order which would empower the council to dispose of the animals.
