Police pick up body of rape victim

A BODY of a young woman believed to have been raped then strangled has been picked up in Lusaka’s Kanyama township, says Police spokespers­on Esther Katongo.

Ms Katongo said the young woman aged between 15 and 18 years was found in an unfinished building in the early hours of yesterday.

“The deceased is suspected to have been murdered between 01:00 hours and 03:00 hours today and the body was found at about 06:30 hours.

“The victim is suspected to have been raped before she was murdered and the body was found with scratches around the neck and whitish substance on her thigh and she had no pants on,” she said.

She said the body is lying in the University Teaching Hospital (UTH) mortuary.

And Ms Katongo said that three people among them a four-month-old baby believed to be from the same family died in a road traffic accident while 11 others sustained injuries at Kashitu 2 along the Ndola highway in Kapiri Mposhi.

She said the driver, Robert Kafunda, aged 40 of Kamuchanga township in Mufulira had 14 passengers on board the Nissan van, registrati­on number BAH 8603

“The accident happened due to excessive speeding hence the driver lost control of the motor vehicle which later overturned several times off the road.

“The deceased who died on the spot have been identified as Given Nayame aged 31 of Kamuchanga compound, J uliet Mutambo aged 43 of Kalengwa, Kalulushi and a baby girl Esther Precious Simushi aged between 4-5 months,” she said.

The injured were all admitted to the Kapiri Mposhi District Hospital while the bodies were lying in hospital mortuary.
