Congratulations Ms Elizabeth Phiri, the Kanyama lawmaker
Dear Editor,
I WISH to congratulate Ms Elizabeth Phiri, the Member of Parliament for Kanyama constituency on her appointment as Gender Minister.
The ministerial portfolio fell vacant following the death of the incumbent in June this year, Ms Victoria Kalima who was Kasenengwa MP.
Ms Phiri is a seasoned politician who once served in the diplomatic mission and was elected as MP for Kanyama constituency in 2016.
Zambia is making frantic efforts in achieving a 50-50 parity representation to positions of influence including political appointments.
Her appointment has, however, elated some civil society organisations.
These include Zambia National Women's Lobby Group (ZNWLG), Non-Governmental Organisation Coordinating Council (NGOCC), among others.
It is a well-known fact that Zambia is faced with a number of challenges regarding gender matters which require urgent attention.
These include narrowing the gap between men and women; boys and girls, fighting genderbased violence (GBV), fighting early marriages particularly the girl-child, empowering vulnerable people in society such as orphans, differently abled people, the aged among others.
In my conclusion, I am very optimistic that the new minister will be equal to the task in meeting people's aspirations in the gender mainstream.
All the best to Ms Phiri in her new appointment. Furthermore, let her continue with the development agenda on gender issues of her predecessor, Ms Kalima.
E. PHIRI,
Lusaka.
