‘CURB CORRUPTION IN POLICE SERVICE’

- By NATION REPORTER

THE Zambia Police service should do more in curbing corruption among it ranks, the United Party for National Development (UPND) in Sinazongwe district in Southern Province has said.

Sinazongwe district UPND Spokesperson George Bbabi said what happened in Lusaka last week where Lusaka Province Minister Bowman /usambo cornered traffic police officers manning a roadblock and receiving bribes was just the tip of the iceberg.

Mr Bbabi said the trend was worse in Southern Province, particularly in districts with intense farming activities.

He told the Daily Nation in a telephone interview that what the Lusaka Province Minister did should have been done by the Inspector General of Police Kakoma Kanganja.

Mr Bbabi observed that corrupt activities in the Zambia police had become the order of the day regardless of where one operated from.

“Lusaka Province Minister Bowman Lusambo must be commended for his good work in the country. We have been saying over and over again that there is corruption in the police service but they could not listen to us until it took a minister to expose it...we salute him, he is doing a good job," said Mr Bbabi.

He stated that what was happening in Lusaka was not uncommon in other parts of Southern Province and the country as a whole.

"Here in Sinazongwe, what happened in Lusaka is exactly what has been happening where motorists are charged without being given receipts," he said.

"Let the police command rise to the occasion, we want to see a change...let them learn from what happened," he said.
