Police integrity lacking

- Solon Kalumba

TDear Editor he introduction of cameras on the road simply perpetuates the “commercialization “of traffic business started by the Police. Just as police integrity was lacking in collecting and pocketing money from citizens the new system of mechanization of the same practice lacks legitimacy and integrity.

Instead of the Police collecting money for their pockets, the money is now being directed elsewhere. The end result is the same, motorists are being milked.

The biggest difference now is that a lot more money will be collected because the collection has been mechanized and therefore extended to a larger audience. It is true that traffic will be slowed down, but is that the intention?

Collecting money from traffic offenders is certainly not the same as reducing the rate of accidents which never happened in the first place.

I agree with sentiments that Government should provide proof in terms of statistics to show the number of accidents that have taken places in the areas where camera have been placed to prove that there was need for them.

Fishing in a captive audience of motorists is certainly the easiest way of raising money, but to what end?

Clarity must be obtained to ensure the cooperation of Zambians in this entire exercise which will undoubtedly put a great strain on transportation in the country because speed alone is not the cause of accidents.
