Siavonga cries for modern market

- By NATION REPORTER

CHIEF Sinadambwe of the Tonga speaking people of Siavonga has called on the local authority to construct a modern market in the area.

The chief said the current structure was weather-beaten and had become a laughing stock to the locals and visitors.

Speaking during a full council meeting at Lakeview Lodge, the traditional leader observed that the existing Siavonga market had become an eyesore to both residents and visitors.

“The current standard of the market is not good. There is need for the district to build a modern market. Let the local authority borrow money from somewhere for this project. The people visiting the town are laughing at us,” said Chief Sinadambwe.

Meanwhile, Kariba Ward councillor Phallen Kachelo said the local authority was losing a lot of revenue because traders at Siavonga Main Market were resisting paying levies due to the poor state of the market.

“After the people were removed from the streets, they were just heaped in the market and so the place is congested. I'm sorry for using the word heaped but that is the truth on the ground,” said Mr Kachelo.

During the same meeting, Chief Sinadambwe observed that despite the four chiefs in Siavonga and Chirundu districts having banned charcoal burning, some traders have defied the ban.

He said lack of barriers to trap vehicles used in the transportation of charcoal was contributing to the problem.
