ACCESS to clean water supply and adequate sanitation by everyone is a key aspect of sustainable development, President Lungu has said.
President Lungu said water supply and sanitation was critical for all sectors in the economy to enhance productivity. He was speaking yesterday during the handover ceremony of the Smart Water Supply project in Jack Compound under the auspices of Millennium Challenge Account (MCA) Zambia Compact which will cater for over 30,000 households. President Lungu expressed happiness and noted that MCA Zambia had delivered on its commitment to implement the project and give residents of Jack compound reliable water supply with support from the $355 million grant funding provided by the United States government. “Zambia and America enjoy cordial bilateral relationships that have existed for decades. The US $355 million grant is one of the many examples of the tremendous support received from the US government through its agencies. “The Lusaka Water Supply Sanitation and Drainage Project that has been implemented for the last five years will directly improve the lives of over 1.2 million residents of the city of Lusaka,” he said. And MCA vice president, General Counselor and Corporate Secretary Jeanne Hauch said improved water supply and sanitation will save lives and help provide the foundation for Zambia’s economic growth. “Zambian Government leaders have demonstrated a steadfast commitment to the Compact’s goals throughout development and implementation of this Compact,” she said. Meanwhile the US Ambassador to Zambia Daniel Foote said as the largest bilateral donor to Zambia the US government provided over $500 million annually to Zambia.
