Opposition sponsors student ‘candidates’
A NAMED opposition political party sponsored campaigns in the upcoming November 9, 2018 University of Zambia Students Union (UNZASU) elections with the aim of using students for political purposes, Zambia Republican Party (ZRP) president Wright Musoma has charged. Mr. Musoma said he had inside information of the activities that the opposition party was undertaking. He urged students not to be lured by what he described as evil politicians whose aim was to call for protests. He advised the students to vote for student leadership who were well meaning and of their choice. He told the Daily Nation yesterday, that the opposition was determined to extend their selfish motives to all higher learning institutions such as the Copperbelt University (CBU) and National Institute of Public Administration (NIPA) among others. And Zambia National Students Union (ZANASU) secretary general Isaac Mwanza has prodded Members of Parliament to pass a law to ban politics in higher learning institutions to allow students concentrate on their academic activities “As ZANASU we urge all Members of Parliament to collaborate and pass a law to bans political activities in higher learning institutions as we feel this will help students to focus on academic activities,” he said. Mr. Mwanza said those sponsoring students at UNZA or any other higher learning institutions should come out publicly if they did not have a hidden agenda. He said as much as students had a right to engage in politics and affiliate with any party of their choice, Parliament should pass a law to ban politics in the higher learning institutions for the sake of academic progress.
