Confront facebook owner

-

Dear Editor,

IDO not understand why the Government and those responsible have failed to meet and confront Facebook authorities over the lies that are continually being published on this site.

Yesterday the founder and chief executive of facebook Mark Elliot Zuckerberg was being interviewed on CNN and expressed severe remorse that the platform was being used by evil people to spread lies and hatred which in some cases led to death. He indicated that the company was doing everything possible, and in fact established a department that was tracking down fake postings which were meant to cause injury. Such sites were being shut down.

Why has our Government failed to speak to facebook to take down sites which are so outrageous in their assertions. At one stage recently one of the sites claimed that A minister facing arrest had poisoned senior investigative officer.

This site names people openly knowing full well that nothing would happen as their identities are not known and therefore no action can be taken. I would like to suggest that Zicta and the Ministry of Information must meet with the Facebook officials and show them the type of postings which are not only defamatory but great danger to national security as they make very inflammatory statements without offering any proof. Zuckeberg was very clear that his company was not [prepared to host sites whose sole purpose was to spread lies and hatred of politi9cal nature. The intention of facebook was not to cause injury but ro provide a platform for wholesome exchange of news and information among the many subscribers.

I found this explanation to be very convincing and I would want to ask our Government to move quickluy and seek their assistance to provide closer scrutriny of the anonymous postings which are far from being wholesome.
