FARMERS ADVISED TO PLANT SUITABLE SEED VARIETIES
Farmers in Gwembe valley have been urged to plant good seed varieties that can grow under harsh weather conditions prevailing in the area.
Siavonga Member of Parliament Darius Mulunda said it was important for farmers in the area to seek proper guidance from the agricultural extension officers in their localities before deciding which seed variety or crop to plant this season. “We thank God for the rain and I’m urging all farmers in Siavonga and the Gwembe valley to choose good seed varieties and crops that are suitable for the area,” he said.
He said there was need for farmers to consider planting a variety of crops due to harsh weather conditions, coupled with the challenges of climate change in the valley.
“As you may be aware, the valley receives very little rain and in some cases nothing, so the farmers must start thinking outside the box by planting different types of crops to secure their food needs.
And in another development, the opposition law maker is worried at the incident in which some farm workers at Yalelo fish farm in Siavonga’s Kamimbi area were treated at the hospital after suffocating in one of the cold rooms.
He said he has made arrangements to visit the area to find out what really transpired at the farm. The parliamentarian said companies must ensure they created safer and conducive work environments for their workers to avoid injuries and death.
‘’Workers are supposed have safer work spaces and not to suffocate so tomorrow (today) I will be at Yalelo to see to it that people are working in a conducive environment with decent salaries,” he said.
