Back fish ban, Namwala residents urged
THE community in Namwala should support the annual fishing ban which will be effective from December 1, 2018 and will end in February 2019, the Department of Fisheries said in a statement issued in the district yesterday.
The department asked all stakeholders in the district to support the fish ban to allow the fish to breed during the period of the ban.
And Namwala fisheries technician Joshua Chibolela, when contacted for a comment, said the department had sent out letters to key stakeholders such as traditional leaders to help sensitize their subjects on the importance of the fish ban.
Fishmongers and traders alike in the area have consequently been advised to make necessary arrangements to transport their fish to wherever they intended to take it before December 1, 2018 to avoid any inconvenience.
“Otherwise they risk being apprehended when found in possession of fish (after December 1) as there is no provision in fisheries (Act) for a grace period of movement of fish outside or within the district, during the fish ban, “he said. - ZANIS
