Wina optimistic about vision 2030

- By LINDA SOKO TEMBO

ZAMBIA’s vision is to become a prosperous middle income country by 2030 but without a common approach and action very little will be achieved, Vice President Inonge Wina has said.

Ms Wina said it was for this reason that Zambia had developed the Seventh Development Plan (SDP) 2017-2021 which is based on a cluster of sectors coming together to address issues affecting the country.

She was speaking in Thailand, Bangkok at a three days global food conference organised by the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) and the International Food Policy Research Insti tute under the theme “Accelerating the End of Hunger and Malnutrition” A Global Event. Ms Wina said the world should count on Zambia on “Accelerating the end of hunger and Malnutrition” as it had developed a long- term investment in agriculture.

“Zambia with the population of over 16, million people has developed long-term investment in agriculture social protection and physical infrastructure projects.”

Ms Wina said in 2015, all the UN member states had committed to ending hunger by 2030 adding that before that Africa had also committed to ending hunger by 2025 through the Malabo Declaration. She said she was confident that the vast knowledge and best practices around the conference were sufficient enough to propel Zambia to success.

“What brings Zambia to Thailand is the will and commitment to offer solidarity to fast tracking our collective response to ending hunger and malnutrition globally. Ms Wina said it was clear that countries were racing against time and that they only had a maximum of 11 years to end hunger in the world by 2030.

She said it was possible and also realistic to end hunger and malnutrition because countries such as Thailand had significantly reduced hunger and malnutrition through programmes that impacted positively on the population.
