Plot scam unearthed near Zesco lines

- By NATION REPORTER

UNSCRUPULOUS people in collusion with Kitwe City Council employees are illegally allocating plots close to ZESCO power lines in Zimba area of Ndeke Township.

Investigations by the Daily Nation showed that the illegal plot allocation is rampant on Nakambala road in Ndeke.

Some residents in the area told the Daily Nation that some people believed to be working with the cartel compromising council employees and councillors were behind the illegal allocation of plots in the ZESCO power lines.

Kitwe Mayor Christopher Kang’ombe confirmed having received such a report from some members of the public, but that he would issue a comprehensive statement after a briefing with Town Clerk Bonwell Luanga.

“I also received a text from members of the public that people were allocating plots during the night in the ZESCO pole lines, but I cannot say anything now. I need to talk to the Town Clerk and find out if at all there are plots in that area,’’ Mr Kang’ombe said.

And residents from various parts of Kitwe told the Daily Nation that the allocation of plots in the ZESCO pole lines at night is an indication of the levels of ineptitude at the council.

Joselyn Mwanza said the KCC was connected to illegal allocation of land through employees, and councillors.

“We live here in Ndeke Township and we see people during the night allocating plots in ZESCO pole lines. We have informed the Mayor about it, but nothing is being done. So with this situation, I can say the council is connected to these illegal allocations of land. They cannot even deny it,” Ms Mwanza said.

She said illegal allocation of land has become lucrative business in Kitwe because all those involved were not being punished, but instead were walking the streets and driving expensive vehicles.
