ZAMBIA Army has pledged to support the Lusaka City Council (LCC) achieve the “Keep Zambia green and clean campaign in the city.

Army Commander Lieutenant-General William Sikazwe said the army would continue supporting the council in its efforts to keep the city clean.

He commended Lusaka Mayor Miles Sampa’s efforts towards achieving a green and clean city.

Lt-Gen Sikazwe said Zambia Army had been a long standing partner of the City Council and that the gesture of goodwill between the two can be evidenced from the Kanyama disaster of 1977 and the cholera outbreaks of the 1990s and recently in 2017 and 2018.

Speaking during a dinner held by the Army commander in honour of Lusaka Mayor Miles Sampa in Lusaka, Gen Sikazwe said the construction of Simon Mwewa modern market by Zambia Army engineers would decongest the Central District Business (CDB) and other trading places.

And Lt-Gen Sikazwe has appealed to Mr Sampa to quickly intervene in the Zambia Army land in Chalala area which is threatened with encroachment to ensure that it was fully protected.

“In December 2017, Lusaka was affected by an outbreak

cholera and the defence forces under the directive of President Edgar Lungu moved in to assist Lusaka City Council and Ministry of Health to clean the city, therefore as Zambia Army will be ready to render any support in case of any calamity,” said Lt-Gen Sikazwe.

Mr Sampa said the city of Lusaka had many challenges which required consented efforts by all stakeholders such as Zambia Army.

The local authority has rolled out a campaign for a green, clean and healthy city.

And Mr Sampa assured the commander that his office would do everything possible to ensure that the land which was meant to build Chalala Barracks at the old Chandamali riffle range is protected from encroachment.
