ZESCO backpedals on promise?

- By LINDA SOKO TEMBO

ZESCO has failed on its promise to maintain the grounds and lawns in front of its head office in Lusaka.

The electricity supply company adopted the space in early 2000 during the Robinson Mwansa-led administration and committed itself to continue to maintain it.

But a check on Saturday, found the lawns overgrown with grass and all sorts of weeds while the road bypass is in a deplorable and sorry state.

A Lusaka clergy and former ZESCO employee Solomon Mbulo expressed disappointment with the utility company for failing to maintain the area at the head office.

“We drilled a borehole, planted the tress that you are seeing there and also put nice grass but when we look at the state of the environment now its quiete different,” he said.

He complained that he and other residents in Thronpark area avoided using the road especially when it rained, because it became impassable, adding that, for them to go to Levy Shopping Mall they had to use a longer route on Great North Road then Cairo Road and join into Church Road.

Pastor Mbulo urged ZESCO management to consider working on the road and the environment through corporate social responsibility (CRS) for the sake of preserving their own vehicles and the ones for the community.

He said ZESCO would not spent a lot of money working on the small stretch compared to the cost of maintainace their vehicles when they broke down.

Pastor Mbulo urged Road Development Agency to also consider working on the road as it was a busy road used by many motorists.
