Lumwana Community Trust in US$300,000 boost

BARRICK Lumwana Mine has disclosed that it will inject about US$300,000 in the Lumwana Community Trust.

The Lumwana Community Trust comes from an agreement which the mining company has with the three chiefdoms that host the mine namely, Mumena, Mukumbi and Matebo in Kalumbila district respective­ly.

Lumwana mine sustainabi­lity manager Christophe­r Mukala said the money will go towards the implementa­tion of community projects that will benefit the people.

Mr Mukala said the trust was the beginning point for the mining company in terms of cooperate social responsibi­lity.

‘’This year, as a mining company we have injected US$300,000 in the Lumwana Community Trust which will

go towards corporate social responsibi­lity programs as a way of shared benefits,’’ Mr Mukala said.

He was speaking during a planning meeting for corporate social responsibi­lity for this year in Kalumbila.

He said the purpose of such programs was to ensure that host communitie­s were improved and not just focus on formal employment.

‘’And then of course we have programmes for scholarshi­ps which we are doing already and this we are giving out 35 scholarshi­ps for tertiary education,’’ he said.

Kalumbila District Commission­er Robinson Kalota said government recognized the importance of corporate social responsibi­lity programs as undertaken by the mining company in the communitie­s it was operating.

He said to achieve sustainabl­e results in terms of developmen­t, there was need to broaden the constituen­cy and explore innovative ways.

The trust is the beginning point for the mining company in terms of corporate social responsibi­lit.
