Nyango residents cry for school re-opening
PEOPLE of Mumbeji area in Senior Chief Mukumbi of the Kaonde speaking people in Kalumbila have called on the government to reopen Nyango community school which has been closed since December last year.
Representing the aggrieved kayinya residents at a stakeholders meeting yesterday, subchieftainess Kayinya expressed sadness over the development.
The traditional leader said school going children were finding it difficult to access education as the nearest is over 30 kilometres from the community.
She disclosed that the having a well built 1x2 classroom block which was built with the use of the constituency development fund in 2013 has not been open since last year forcing pupils to stay home.
“We are appealing to the government to consider reopening this school because it is the only school in this community,” the traditional leader said.
She also appealed to the government to consider deploying a teacher at the school once it is opened.
And Kalumbila District Commissioner Robson Kalota has assured the people of kayinya area of governments’ quick intervention.
Mr Kalota however expressed disappointment with the area councilor for failing to report the matter to relevant authorities.
“I want to assure you the people of this community the school will be opened soon and teachers will be sent here as per request,” he said.
He said the government’s desire is to see to it that its citizens attain a certain level of education in line with the seventh national development plan.
