MKUSHI District Council in conjunction with the Veterinary Department and State Police have embarked on an exercise of killing stray dogs in the area.

Council Public Relations Officer Tamara Mwanza confirmed in an interview in Mkushi yesterday and said the killing of the stray dogs was due to increased cases of dog bites in the area and also to prevent

outbreak of rabies, a disease she described as deadly.

Ms Mwanza said the stray dogs extermination exercise would take two weeks or more and that the council had received overwhelming support from the community for its action in which and already five stray dogs had been killed.

“As Mkushi Town Council, we have embarked on an exercise where we are gunning down stray dogs. This is so because in the recent past the district has been encountering dog bites which has led to rabies. So, as a matter of curbing this disease before it spreads, we have decided to embark on the gunning down of stray dogs,” Ms Mwanza said.

She urged the public to take their dogs for vaccination against rabies and that they should only keep not more than two dogs per household as required by law.

Households which would be found with unregistered dogs and flouted the law, would have their dogs killed and charged a penalty fee of K450, she said.

She also implored the public to report all stray dogs to the local authority for action as they had become dangerous to society.

Meanwhile, Stalwart Investment Limited workers yesterday stormed company offices demanding payment of their three months’ salary arrears.

The workers demanded to be paid their three months’ salary arrears in full as a lamp sum and not in installments.

When contacted for a comment, Stalwart Investment Limited project coordinator Davies Mubanga said the matter was being sorted out and that the workers would be paid any time.
