Two Luano bridges washed away

- By PETER MALASHA

KAMPOKO and Maunda bridges in Luano have been washed away following a heavy down pour, Council chairman Reverend Gabriel Mwami has said.

Rev. Mwami said in an interview that both bridges were of the economic value and as a result, hundreds of people from either sides of the district had been cut off.

Rev. Mwami said Kampoko Bridge which was located on Kampoko River before Ching’ombe had cut off people of the valley and the plateau.

“We have two bridges that have been washed away. One at Kampoko just before Ching’ombe and people have been cut off from the rest of the district. So, Ching’ombe has been cut off from the rest of the district. It is the vital economical instrument that connects the valley that side and the rest of the plateau.

“It is also a connection to health facilities because referral cases that are from Ching’ombe to Mkushi or Kabwe pass through that bridge. No transportation can be done in between,” Rev. Mwami said.

Rev. Mwami explained that the other bridge Maunda, located at Mkushi River tributary before old Mkushi, had also cut off connection and communication between Kabwe as well as old Mkushi from Lunsemfwa side.

Rev. Mwami said both incidents had already been reported to the Road Development Agency (RDA) and Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit.

Rev. Mwami appealed to residents in the affected areas to be cautious because both rivers were crocodile-infested.

He urged residents to remain calm as government was doing everything possible to address the situation.
