Senseless demands on Government resources

- Dear Editor,

TIME has come that we as a country began to spend within our means and not in then reckless manner that has led to the collapse of most economies that have embraced socialist policies.

There is presently a prevailing idea that Government should pay civil servants higher wages and that tertiary education including meals should be free.

Why should the ordinary Zambian villager who has no access to clean water forego such facilities in order to fund the ,meals of thankless students and indeed high pay for civil servants who are hardly in

their offices. The proliferation of universities means that more students are now able to access higher education therefore no special favours should be given to any category of students especially when such award is repeatedly abused to create anarchy.

Parents who send their children to private universities fork out heavily because they know the value of education. It is only fair that Government should be able to extend education opportunities to as many as possible and this means that superfluous spending such as meal allowance should be sacrificed for the benefit of many.

Money does not grow on trees and this means that those who have their hands on the purse have a duty to the entire country to spend wisely. Consumption has never been a wise use of resources.
