Liwewe however insisted that his association has not prevented anyone local player from going for greener pastures.

Mulenga and Nsabata are cur- rently in Mongu with the Zambia National Soccer team to prepare for the crucial CHAN tournament to be held in Morocco.

The Chipolopolo boys are in Group B of the 2018 CHAN tour- nament which will runs from Jan- uary 13 to February 14.

Nyirenda’s boys will do battle with group B opponents Namibia, Uganda and Ivory Coast and will face the cranes on January 14 in their opening match.

Zambia will be making its third appearance at the championship after finishing third in 2009 and in 2016 where they were eliminated at the quarterfinal stage.

THE Zambia National Building Society (ZNBS) has donated K10,000 towards Catherine Phiri’s World Boxing Council (WBC) gold bantamweight defence title fight against South African Gabi- sile Tshabalala on August 27 at Government Complex in Lusaka.

At the handover ceremony at ZNBS head office in Lusaka yesterday, man- aging director Joseph Chikolwa said the bank was happy to partner with Oriental Quarries Boxing Promotions (OQBP) to ensure the successful stag- ing of the event. Chikolwa expressed confidence that Catherine would de- fend the title as she was a fearless and tactical boxer in the ring.

“Catherine is a beacon of hope for many young ladies out there and we feel honoured to offer this sponsorship to her defence fight.

“Her fearlessness and tact in the ring is what gives us the confidence to side with the winning team through this sponsorship,” he said

He said the bank would use the day of the fight to put across messages of financial literacy. “Our involvement in this cause is influenced by the fact that boxing in Zambia has begun to attract large crowds which gives our brand an opportunity to interact with people.

‘‘We hope that in the process we can put across messages of financial literacy as the country looks towards increasing financial inclusion from the current 59.3 percent,” he said.

Chikolwa also invited Catherine to open a student account with ZNBS to secure her educational career. OQBP operations manager Christopher Malunga said the stable was humbled by the bank’s sponsorship package and will ensure the money is used for boxing.

“We are grateful to the bank’s donation towards the staging of this fight. Our budget for staging this fight is K790,000 and the deficit is now K180, 000. We are hopeful that the deficit will be met before the fight,” he said.

Catherine thanked ZNBS for supporting female boxing and gave an as- surance of victory on August 27.

“I am thankful for the sponsorship from ZNBS. This gives me the morale to train harder and ensure I defend the title, which I will definitely do,” she said.

He said it was time that every Zambian rallied behind President Lungu because that was what de- mocracy demanded.

“The overall performance from all the boxers was excellent especially from the boxers from Lusaka. They showd that they were in the gym for a long time and were ready for their respec- tive bouts.

“As for boxers from Mitanda boxing stables, more needs to be done. The boxers will have to improve because their performances were below par. Their coach needs to do more,” Chomba said. He reaffirmed ZBF’s commitment to con- tribute to the growth of boxing in Zambia.
