‘Reporting Lungu to ICC biggest joke of year’
REPORTING President Edgar Lungu to the International Criminal Court (ICC) when he has done nothing wrong is the biggest joke of the year, veteran politician George Mpombo has said.
Dr Mpombo described the decision by the opposition Alliance to report Mr Lungu to ICC as a mere joke.
He told the Daily Nation that the Head of State had not committed any crime against humanity as accused by the opposition alliance, saying that the move was misguided and baseless.
“It is an exercise in futility and serious comedy to drag the ICC into local political differences which are outside its mandate.
The ICC was created as an institution to bring to book people suspected of committing crimes against humanity and mass atrocities like former president Charles Taylor and several warlords in DRC and Central African Republic.
“President Lungu has not done anything wrong since was voted in power,” Dr Mpombo said.
And Dr Mpombi advised the opposition to tone down to allow the national dialogue to take place instead of being arrogant.
Dr Mpombo said the opposition had created the political impasse which had contributed to the failure to reasonable dialogue to take place.
He said the opposition must desist from unwarranted criticism, mere character assassination and seek dialogue to end the political instability that had characterised in the country.
“The tsunami of political toxicity in the country is both worrying and has reached appalling and galling levels, the freewheeling ego-driven congenital lies must be checked.
“What the Zambian situation requires as a matter of urgency is to engage in constructive engagement with each other to douse the political tension which is being fanned by reckless political conduct and utterances,” Dr Mpombo said.
