- By KALOBWE BWALYA

THE Lusaka City Council (LCC) has set aside K260, 000 for clearing of the overgrown vegetation in all its four cemeteries, says public relations manager George Sichimba.

Mr Sichimba said the amount would carter for labour as well as the cost of procuring tools to be used in the exercise.

He said the exercise would commence this week and would go on for the next three months. This is contained in a statement issued by Mr Sichimba in Lusaka yesterday. He said the council has opted to engage inmates from Zambia Correctional Services to quicken the exercise of clearing the overgrown vegetation.

Mr Sichimba said the overgrown vegetation in the cemeteries is posing security concerns hence the need to clear it as quickly as possible by engaging a well organised institution like the Zambia Correctional Services.

He said the situation has also led to some unscrupulous people to be conducting illegal activities in the cemeteries such as illegal dumping of waste and illegal sell of beer and food stuffs amomg other illegalities.

However, those engaging in illegal activities in the cemeteries should be warned that the Council has devised ways of monitoring all activities in its cemeteries, Mr Sichimba said He warned that those who will be found wanting risk being prosecuted under the existing laws. Mr Sichimba said members of the public are also encouraged to be reporting to Council, any suspicious activities happening in all the cemeteries.
