BETUZ CONDEMNS ASSAULT ON NDOLA TEACHER

Basic Education Teacher’s Union of Zambia (BETUZ) has condemned the assaulting of a Ndola teacher by some boys believed to be members of a gang terrorisin­g people in Kansenshi residentia­l area.

BETUZ secretary-general Jeffrey Simuntala said in an interview that it was unfortunat­e that a teacher was punched in the face by troublesom­e boys within the premises of the school.

Mr Chikwa said in an interview after the meeting that he was hoping that the MPs would continue with their initiative.

And Mr Kalobo has urged the local authority to select two streets where vendors would be allowed to conduct their business after 17:00 hours.

Mr Kalobo said he was hopeful that the local authority would listen to the pleas of vendors who were asking to be given two streets where they could be trading from.

"Street vending is everywhere, but what is needed is to control it. So what the council can do, is to select two streets where vendors can be conducting their trade after 17.00hours,” the MP said. pupils into good responsibl­e citizens of the nation.

On Friday, some boys, believed to be members of the ‘ Gorilla’ assaulted a teacher at Kansenshi Combined Primary and Secondary School during athletics competitio­n.

Police have since arrested two boys and it is believed that former pupils and school drop-out shave come together to form a gang.

But Mr Simumtala said teachers must be protected as they played an important role in the developmen­t of the country by ensuring that citizens were educated.

“As a union we will not allow our teachers to be subjected to inhuman treatment and we urge all teachers to be alert and report any suspicions to the police,” he said.

Mr Simuntala further called on the security wings to ensure they deal with the culprits and to intensify security around schools in Ndola.

And Copperbelt Police Commission­er Charity Katanga said the two suspects who assaulted the teacher would not be released on police bond and that they would appear in court today.
