RICKETY CHIFUBU BRIDGES WORRY MP

- By NATION REPORTER

CHIFUBU Member of arliament ran ga’m i has appealed to residents in his constituency in Ndola to avoid using unsafe bridges.

Mr Ng’ambi said the constituency had a number of bridges which had become a danger because of the heavy rain.

He cited the recent death of a Grade 9 pupil who drowned after falling into the stream at one of the bridges, linking Chifubu and Pamodzi townships.

He noted that because of the recent heavy rainfall some bridges had become weak and thus not reliable crossing links for residents.

Mr Ng’ambi said he would engage the Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit (DMMU) to see how best the matter could be resolved.

Meanwhile, residents of Chifubu and Pamodzi Townships have called on Government to construct new foot bridges to link the two areas.

Jeremiah Kabwe, a resident of Pamodzi, said the present foot bridge posed a threat to the people’s safety.

Mr Kabwe said the foot bridge had no guard rails which was very dangerous for school-going children in the two areas.

He said a number of people and children had fallen into the stream resulting in fatal injuries and drowning.

And Ms Rebecca Mwansa of Chifubu, said foot bridges which were in the area were in poor shape.

Ms Mwansa said the rickety foot bridges were not strong enough and could collapse anytime.

She said there was need for Government to construct new and stronger foot bridges in the area to avoid fatalities.

Also Davies Mwaba stated that the foot bridges said that a lot of fatalities had been reported during this rainy season.
