Gutted Masala market a ‘full’ dump site

- By NATION REPORTER

SOME residents and traders in Masala Township in Ndola have continued to dump garbage at Kapalala market which was gutted in 2017.

The area has now been turned into a dumping site, a situation deemed as a risk to people around the area.

Construction of the modern market has not started since the facility was reduced to ashes after an inferno.

Ms Jane Mwila, a displaced marketer, complained over the delay to set up a new market, saying the market had been turned into a dump site and a parking space for minibuses.

“People are now using Kapalala market as a toilet and a dump site and the area now gives out a heavy stench,” she said.

Elizabeth Banda a marketeer in Masala wondered why Government had taken so long to put up a new market structure.

Ms Banda complained of the inconvenience caused as she did not have a permanent place to setup her business.

She said it was sad to see a market where she used to sell goods being reduced to a dumping site.

A resident, Bupe Musonda, said the area posed a huge threat to an outbreak of diseases as young children like hanging around the site.

Ms Musonda called on Government and the local authority to expedite the process of putting up a new market.

Efforts to get Kabushi Member of Parliament Bowman Lusambo proved futile as his phone went unanswered.
