‘Probe drug abuse among Mtendere youth gangs’

- By NOEL IYOMBWA

PATROITIC Front Mtendere ward 33 councillor Watson Mtonga has appealed to the Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC) to quickly move in and help curb drug abuse in Mtendere Compound.

Mr. Mtonga said yesterday that this has been worsened by criminal youthful gangs who were abusing drugs and alcohol.

Mr Mtonga said there was need to arrest the suppliers of drugs whom he said have evaded the area and were suspected to have come from Chibolya compound.

He explained that there was an increase in the number of gangs in the area because of drug dealers who have moved into the area.

He disclosed that on Saturday a gang of young boys popularly known as the uffiest ran battles with the police.

He said some members of the group have since been arrested and detained at Woodlands and Kalikiliki police post.

“The biggest issue is that let us deal with those who are dealing with drugs. We can’t allow Chibolya gangs coming into Mtendere and many young boys are becoming gang members because of the drugs that they take. Perpetrators are well known people so the police must investigate this matter and when they arrest them they should be given stiffer punishment, “he said.

Mr. Mtonga called on the police to intensify patrols in the area to curb crime which he said was alarming.
