We'll now pay water bills – Ndeke residents

- By MUYANI SHINJABALE

RESIDENTS of Upper Ndeke Township of Bwana Mkubwa Constituency in Ndola have promised to be up-to-date in paying water bills now that supply has improved.

The residents are elated that the unjustified bills that had been outstanding for a long time had been written off because they have had no water supply from 2004 to about 2017.

Kafubu Water and Sewerage Company (KWSC) had cancelled water bills worth K2.9 million for the residents of Upper Ndeke Township in Ndola.

The residents expressed gratitude towards KWSC and their Member of Parliament Jonas Chanda for facilitate to the cancellation of the bills.

Mr Jeremiah Kunda a resident of Upper Ndeke said he had lived in the area for more than 25 years and the area did not have any water for a long time.

Mr Kunda noted that the lack of water in the area was due to ruptured water pipes which were very old and added that the writing off of bills was justified.

He said it would not have made any sense for anyone to pay for water which had never flowed in the pipes.

"Even if you didn't use the water from Kafubu, you'd get billed because the water bills were fixed. This was unfair because most people used their own boreholes because the area experienced erratic water supply, " he said.

Ms Joyce Musonda, another resident, said in a separate interview that she was one of the victims who had a bill as high as K15, 000 when the family used a well.

Ms Musonda added that she was devastated when she learned of how much her water bill had increased as she had no fixed source of income.

Also Mr Kennedy Chambika said he was grateful to the MP and other stakeholders for fighting for the residents.

Mr Chambika said the act showed that the MP and Government had the best interest of the people at heart.
