STATE ALLIVIATES HUNGER IN MONZE
has released 100 metric tonnes (8, 000 bags) of mealie meal to Monze for distribution to people facing hunger in all the three constituencies.
This came to light during a district Disaster Management and Mitigation unit (DMMU) meeting held in Monze and addressed by district commissioner Cyprian Hamanyanga.
Mr Hamanyanga said the distribution of the mealie meal would start this week in all the three constituencies that make up Monze district.
He added that the district had requested for an additional of 30 metric tonnes of maize for sale from the government through the Food Reserve Agency (FRA) to ensure that people facing hunger had access to the food.
Mr Hamanyanga said government was doing everything possible to ensure that relief food was distributed and reached every person facing hunger in the district, saying Government would not allow anyone to die of hunger.
“Government has given us 100 metric tonnes of mealie meal which we shall distribute to people facing hunger in Bweengwa, Moomba and Monze Central Constituencies. We have also requested an additional of 30 metric tonnes from government after the initial 30 metric tonnes of maize for sale got finished,” said Mr Hamanyanga.
District agriculture coordinator Justine Ngosa said the hunger situation in Monze was dire and required serious interventions to prevent any loss of lives.
Mr Ngosa said there was also need to expedite the distribution of relief food received from Government to people in need of food.
Monze is among many districts in the province facing serious hunger as a result of drought that hit most parts of the province during the 2018/2019 farming season resulting in total crop failure in some places.
