Illegal waste dumping worry Kaunda Square residents

- By KALOBWE BWALYA

LUSAKA City Council Public Health Department should consider extending inspections for indiscriminate waste disposal to Kaunda Square Stage One Compound.

A resident, Mr James Monze, said the waste situation in the high density compound had become unbearable especially at the market and along the Chamba Valley Road.

Mr Monze said that some residents were disposing garbage in drainages and other undesignated places such as incomplete buildings.

He said there was need for the council to identify the perpetrators of the malpractice in the area as most residents would be affected in case of disease outbreak.

“LCC should come to Kaunda Square One and see how some people are dumping waste indiscriminately, the situation is a health hazards,” said Mr Monze.

Another resident, Ms Catherine Mtonga, said the residents did not want to subscribe for waste collection but have instead resorted to digging waste pits or dumping waste in undesignated places.

Ms Mtonga said there was need for the LCC to conduct random inspections in the township to find out how the households were managing their waste.

“Despite the council working tirelessly with partners to conducting cleanliness sensitisation campaigns in the city, some residents did not still want to change their behaviour, therefore should be charged,” said Ms Mtonga.

Meanwhile, the LCC has recommended to the Lusaka Fast Track Court to prosecute 20 residents of Mtendere D Section for indiscriminate dumping of waste.

The 20 residents have reportedly not subscribed to any waste management programme and there was strong evidence to suggest that they were part of the group that had turned the school grounds into a dumping site.
