‘Garbage collection a challenge’

- By ROGERS KALERO

SOLID waste management will continue to be a major challenge in Kitwe because of the ever increasing population, Deputy Mayor Evaristo Chilufya has said.

Mr Chilufya said the population boom would continue to contribute to the increasing levels of solid waste.

He said therefore that it was imperative that the residents and the local authority work together in nding a solution to the challenge.

He said in an interview yesterday that one of the solutions to the challenge was to ensure that people disposed of garbage in designated places.

’ s the population grows we will continue to face a challenge of solid waste management, but we will continue to work hard to deal with this challenge.

’ e have a challenge o inadequate trucks, which we use to collect garbage, but the situation has been worsened by indiscriminate throwing of garbage. Residents should throw garbage in designated places to make the work of the council easy ’’ r hilu ya said.

Mr Chilufya said residents should cooperate with the council in solid waste management instead of criticizing the local authority on any issue.

He said indiscriminate dumping of garbage was making the work of the council di cult.

’ o i garbage is thrown everywhere it is di cult to collect, especially with inadequate trucks. So all of us should be cooperative and supportive in terms in terms of solid waste management, instead of criticizing the local authority on any issue ’’ he said.
