- By KALOBWE BWALYA

foreigners are allegedly spending nights at COMESA market in Lusaka following a raid of Chibolya by security wings which sent them fleeing from the area at the weekend.

In an the Daily Mwasambo interview with Nation, Francis an entrepreneur at Comesa market said the "Masai" had abandoned their homes and were spending nights in the market.

Mr Mwasambo said the Masai people who were involved in hair plaiting business were now sleeping in unfinished stalls that were still under construction at the market.

He noted that their security was not granted as that was a public place and less security measures, adding that some thugs from Chibolya were also spending nights there.

"A good number of foreigners mainly Masai are spending nights in Comesa market in unfinished stalls following the raid in Chibolya at the weekend and since they have no fixed abode, they are now living in fear,” said Mr Mwasambo.

Another entrepreneur Mr Amos Masauko wondered why the Masai people who mainly do not have valid papers had continued conducting businesses in corridors, despite government banning street vending.

He observed that the number of the Masai people kept on increasing especially in Lusaka among other foreign immigrants, therefore, the need for proper scrutiny.

Early hours on Saturday a combined security team of Zambia Police, Drug enforcement commission and Immigration officials conducted a joint cleanup operation dubbed “operation Chalo” and apprehended one 113 suspects in connection with various offences.

The objective of the operation was to disrupt illegal activities in Chibolya.
