Congolese doctors donate to children with disabilities

THE Congolese Doctors Association in Zambia (CODAZ) has called on stakeholders to support people with disabilities as they face unimaginable challenges.

CODAZ chairperson, Dr Tierry Malebe said people with disabilities had a lot to offer to society given the necessary support.

He was speaking when the association toured Cheshire Homes Society of Zambia in Kabulonga Lusaka to commemorate Congo’s 59 years of independence and year of the association’s existence.

The association also donated assorted food items worth over K2, 500 among them bags of mealie meal, sugar, rice and cooking oil.

“When we came here a few days ago we were touch with the situation. We said we may not do everything because it was at short notice but we will try as a team to come with a token of some foodstuffs.

“But like we have seen here, the need is great. So, for a start we decided to come with some bags of mealie meal, sugar, rice and cooking oil but we promise to partner with this home,” Dr Malebe said.

He said this would not be the last time for the association to support the home.

“We have seen that they are children with disability but they can offer much more to society, so as doctors we are concerned about the children with disabilities,” he said.

Meanwhile, the sister-in- charge at Cheshire homes thanked CODAZ for the donations.

Sister Fatima Chisalukila said the home relied on donations but also ventured in money generation activities such as a gym, chickens and a vegetable garden.

She expressed need for assistance stating that the home housed 30 children with different disabilities aged between five and 14 years.
