SCHOOL CHILDREN GET ANTI-CRIME TIPS

- By MUYANI SHINJABALE

Zambia Police Service has incorporated school-going children in the community sensitisation programme on the dangers and prevention of crime.

Children have been targeted on dangers of crime and how to prevent it at this year's Zambia International Trade Fair (ZITF).

Zambia Police Deputy Spokesperson, Rae Hamoonga, said the police had taken up the role to sensitise children from various schools at the ZITF on matters of crime.

"This year we have received children from various schools with their teachers who have been taught about their rights as well as to fore warn them on the dangers of crime and how to prevent criminal activities," he said.

Speaking in an interview, Mr Hamoonga said under the victim support unit, the children were being taught lessons on defilement and how to prevent it.

He noted that the children were advised to report any adult that touched them in an indecent manner.

He said the children were being advised to report such an adult to someone the child trusted such as a parent or teacher in the case that the parent was the perpetrator of the crime.

Mr Hamoonga added that the children had also been taught on the dangers of cybercrime as well as the ‘ dos and don’ts’ of the internet.

The children, he said, were being given tips on traffic rules.

He warned teachers against ‘packing’ children like sacks on school buses during school tours as it was not safe, thus urging them to adhere to road safety regulations.
