NDC weighs Lubwa ward election victory chances
OPPOSITION National Democratic Congress (NDC) Secretary General Mwenya Musenge has said the leadership impasse that had rocked his party could affect its performance in the Lubwa local government by-election.
In an interview ahead of today's filing of nominations for the Lubwa ward by-election, Mr Musenge said his party was preparing for the by-election, but was worried that the leadership impasse that rocked the party could affect its chances of scooping the seat.
The former Chimwemwe Member of Parliament (MP) and Copperbelt Minister said he was however optimistic that the campaign team led by provincial chairman Chipoka Mulenga would perform better.
"Well commenting on the
Lubwa by-election, I think the leadership impasse which we had could affect our performance in this by-election, but we will still put up a good fight and come out with some pride,'' Mr Musenge said.
And NDC Copperbelt provincial chairman Chipoka Mulenga could not disclose the name of the candidate to the Daily Nation in Kitwe , saying the party national chairperson for election Menyani Zulu would go on media to announce the candidate.
And UPND Copperbelt provincial information and publicity secretary Kennedy Kalunga said his party was prepared for the filing of nominations in the lubwa local government by-election set for July 30, 2019.
Mr Kalunga said the party had adopted Brian Mwewa and was confident of scooping the seat which fell vacant following the death of Godfridah Chulu
"We are set for tomorrow's (today) filing of nominations and our candidate is Brian Mwewa and I can tell you that victory is certain on July 30. We are grabbing that seat from the PF,'' Mr Kalunga said. And PF Kwacha constituency chairman Alex Chembo said his party was confident of retaining the seat because it has a good candidate |in the name of Julius Kaunda.
Mr Chembo said, apart from having a good candidate, the PF, through its Member of Parliament (MP) Joe Malanji had put up a number of developmental projects in the area.
"We are confident of retaining Lubwa ward because we have a better candidate and our area MP, Joe Malanji has tried his best to develop the area. I don't think the people in the area will fall for lies from any individual because they have seen what the PF has done,'' Mr Chembo said.
