MP GIVEN LUBINDA BEATEN

UNIDENTIFI­ED people yesterday beat Kabwata Member of Parliament Given Lubinda during his tour of Kabwata Market.

Police spokespers­on Esther Katongo yesterday said Mr Lubinda made a complaint of being assaulted by unidenti ed people.

Mrs Katongo said the attack happened between 15: 00 hours and 15:30 hours.

She said the suspects had not yet been identi ed and investigat­ions in the matter had been instituted. A docket of assault had also been opened.

Mrs Katongo, however, said contrary to what was earlier circulatin­g on social media that Mr Lubinda was undressed during the fracas, he was not at any point undressed by the assailants.

At the time he went to report the

matter to Kabwata police station, he was fully dressed.

And a man of unidenti ed age has committed suicide at Lusaka’s Chipata Police Post’s Victim Support Unit (VSU) o ce.

e man, identi ed as Gabby Sakala, took his own life by hanging himself using a string from the trousers.

Police spokespers­on Esther Katongo said the suicide happened yesterday at Lusaka’s Chipata Police Post between 10:50 hours and 11:09 hours.

Ms Katongo said the man was reported to police by a widow aged 30 of Chipata Compound for depriving bene ciaries in the estate of her late husband.

Ms Katongo said Mr Sakala was alleged to have withdrawn K26,000 from the widow’s dead husband’s bank account.

e account’s former holder died in March this year.

She said a female police o cer who was handling the matter left the two in her o ce and went to the inquiries o ce to get the occurrence book so that she could make an entry.

But later the widow also went outside and left Sakala alone in the o ce.

Ms Katongo said when the o cer went back to the o ce, she found the man hanging from the beams where the roof rests and quickly informed the other o cers.

“Scenes of crime o cers were called to examine the scene and the body has been taken to University Teaching Hospital (UTH) mortuary,” she said.

Meanwhile, a Zesco Limited worker identi ed as Paul Kasongo, aged 28, was electrocut­ed on ursday around 12:00 hours at Deniz Block Company near Sangala Police Post as he was repairing a fault.

e body is in UTH mortuary awaiting postmortem.
